Full Circle is an exhibition of new work by Karen Standke inspired by her recent travels around Australia and her impressions of its landscape gained over the last two decades.
The paintings are informed by thorough research into the changing face of the landscape, the impact of climate change and the introduction of weeds and non-native fauna and flora. The signs of these phenomena are everywhere and can be subtle – at first sight they may even be perceived as beautiful, as are the soft, wispy blades of buffalo grass in Central Australia or the vibrant colours of the flowering Paterson’s curse in Victoria. The work in this show focuses on visible and rapid changes in the environment and raises questions around how do we respond emotionally, but also practically, to these challenges?
